I. Introduction

Scripture: John 13:1-17

Mission

“We are a community of Christ-centered disciples who Love God, Love Others, and Make Disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Vision 2023

"We are a family of Jesus seeking believers home to 50 members who are actively participating in discipleship and functioning within our designated pathway. We are a safe place for the hurting and suffering to receive hope and care. Currently, we are entering into our third generation of disciple making. By the grace of God, we have celebrated 10 baptisms this year. We are engaged in mission and ministries that allow us to reach our neighborhoods and the nations."

Pathway

Gather - Grow - Give - Go

II. Humility and Ability

Humility
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less.” - C.S. Lewis
Ability
Our ability to serve comes from the attitude commanded by Jesus not from the action.
“The focus is on desire, not duty”

III. The text

v. 3 - 4
“Jesus, Knowing”
“got up”
v. 5 “began to wash”
v. 6 - 10a (Peter)
Sin, self-gratification, pride, and the desire for power and control are natural
v. 10b - 11 - “Jesus washed Judas’ feet too”
v. 12 - 17 - Jesus’ teaching
v. 15 - “also” - “Just as”
Exalting Jesus in John (Jesus Gives Us the Ability to Serve Humbly (John 13:6–17))
[Just as] indicates not only similarity and adherence to a standard but also the ground on which this discipleship rests and the source from which it gains its strength … it directs them to Jesus’ self-sacrificial love for them as the source and driving force for their love for each other.

IV. Conclusion

“A trait of humble service, which simply cannot be counterfeited, is the willingness to be inconvenienced for someone else’s benefit.”
